Mexico City Metro Remodeling for the 2026 World Cup

Director of Mexico City Metro, Adrián Rubalcava, announced large-scale preparations for the 2026 World Cup. A 40% increase in passenger flow is expected, so the number of trains on Line 2 will increase from 26 to 30. Modernization work will affect Tasqueña, Zócalo, Bellas Artes, and Hidalgo stations, aimed at permanent network improvement, not just the World Cup.

The Azteca Stadium will not have a larger capacity than it previously had. So, we are going to do an exercise similar to what could be done for a very popular football match that moves a lot of people, and this represents a 30% shift». The capital official, who visited the Senate of the Republic last week, explained that an increase of up to 40% is estimated because it is expected that some fans will only want to be outside the colossus of Santa Úrsula. Thus, the train flow on Line 2 will increase. «We are preparing to increase the number of trains we currently have on Line 2, which is 26, to be able to reach the World Cup with 30 trains, which will undoubtedly allow us to provide a service with a sufficiently fast frequency so that the user does not feel this negative impact». Regarding the inconvenience that the works may cause, Rubalcava reminded users that they are not only for the World Cup, but for permanent attention. «Yes, there will be inconvenience in the coming months, but we are sure that the works they are carrying out are not just a quick fix to make it look nice when the World Cup arrives, but something that the user will receive permanently», expressed the Metro director. Which Metro CDMX stations will be remodeled for the 2026 World Cup? Rubalcava detailed that on Line 2, the most intense works are concentrated at the stations Tasqueña, Zócalo, Bellas Artes, and Hidalgo. «Bellas Artes is a station that will require very special attention because the head of government asked that this station have the same characteristics as the Palacio de Bellas Artes itself». The Zócalo station is also considered complicated due to the exhibition of models in the corridors. The director of this transport system added that on the section from the stations Xola to San Antonio Abad, works are also being carried out for the elevated roadway, and for this reason the partial closure of stations; however, there is «a great effort» from the Passenger Transport Network of Mexico City to mitigate the inconvenience. The Collective Transport System Metro expects to have an influx of up to 40% higher during the 2026 World Cup, estimated Adrián Rubalcava, general director, in an interview with the media. «We are preparing to receive, especially on these lines where there will be greater circulation, greater attendance, depending on the line, between a 10 to 40% increase at the time of the matches. There is a reality and an analysis that is worth making».
